Endorsements
Any student, whether an elementary (not early childhood) or secondary teacher education major, may take additional courses towards a middle school endorsement, allowing that person to teach a subject at the middle school level within that endorsement area. Some endorsements may only require a few more courses beyond what is already required in the major itself, making endorsements an easy, but important, addition to the student's course schedule.
As the Illinois State Board of Education noted,
The middle grades encompass grades 5-8 for elementary certificates and 6-8 for secondary certificates. All middle grade endorsements require 18 semester hours of credit in content courses, plus six semester hours of credit in courses designed to acquaint the teacher with the special aspects of teaching at that level.
Only six of the sixteen possible junior high/middle grade endorsements have specific course distribution requirements. All of the other middle grade endorsements require 18 semester hours of coursework in the endorsement area. The requirement for the music endorsement, for example, is simply 18 hours of music coursework.
