Olivet’s Master of Arts in Education: Reading Specialist (MAER) is a unique program where the first courses will qualify a teacher for a Reading Teacher endorsement on either an early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary certificate with the completion of 24 hours of reading instruction and a practicum. With the successful completion of the endorsement requirements, a teacher may apply for the full master’s program and will complete additional coursework (total of 32 hours including the 24) for the degree of Reading Specialist.
In workshop settings, MAER learners develop personal mission statements; explore how personality preferences relate to teaching styles; and collaboratively design problem-based learning units that allow learners choices based on learning differences, that naturally integrate curriculum subjects, and that make the personal computer an indispensable part of the everyday curriculum.
This program is about helping teachers gain skills and utilize tools that will empower them to inspire every learner to personal greatness.
Olivet Nazarene University seeks to develop professional educators in grades K‑12 who, upon completion of the Master of Arts in Education degree, are able to apply new information and methods to help maximize the desire of their learners to achieve their potential. Candidates in the Master of Arts in Education program are involved in instructional activities designed to capitalize on candidates’ individual learning strengths, including learning styles, multiple intelligences, and personal interests.
