Olivet to offer ESL minor
ONU Press Release
Friday, November 10, 2006
To support the increasing demand for teachers qualified to work with English-language learners, Olivet Nazarene University will offer an English as a second language minor, beginning this spring.
The program is intended for students who wish to prepare to teach English to non-native speakers. Those who seek careers in education or international missions, or those who plan to work in the nonprofit sector, are encouraged to participate. The minor will include a combination of grammar, language, teaching and cross cultural studies courses.
“The ESL minor would be an excellent addition to education and various non-education majors alike,” says Dr. Kashama Mulamba, Olivet English professor. “[It will] give our students a strong foundation in teaching English to non-native speakers both in the U.S. and in other countries.”
Local school districts, including Manteno and Kankakee District #111, have already expressed interest in students with ESL approval. With nearly 15 different languages represented in some districts, school officials are more interested in teachers with ESL approval than dual-language teachers.
“We live in a community where the need for teachers of ESL is increasing. This minor is a great way of serving the community,” says Mulamba.
Mulamba has also seen how practical ESL approval is overseas. “Any American who goes to a country where English is not spoken will more likely end up teaching ESL if there is a need for a teacher of English,” he says. “In fact, reports from our alumni indicate some of our English majors find themselves teaching ESL in the U.S. as well as overseas.”

11-21-06 12-Month Teacher Certification Program Begins June 2007
Olivet Nazarene University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program is being offered at Homer 33C School District beginning in June 2007. The program is designed for candidates with baccalaureate degrees who desire an Illinois Standard Elementary(K-9) teaching certificate. The emphasis of the program is placed on meeting entrance requirements into the profession of teaching. This program is unique in that it centers on being “field based” by combining professional study with practical classroom experiences. The focus is on the preparation of prospective teachers who will provide learning opportunities for children, with concern for them as human beings and for their unique learning behaviors.
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program contains professional courses to assist candidates in qualifying for state certification. However, additional courses may be necessary for certification in general education or if the candidate desires to complete additional endorsement areas. Eligibility for certification is validated by the University registrar.
To participate in this program will require a full time commitment from a candidate, as the entire program is to be completed during a twelve-month period (June 2007 – June 2008). Candidates will be involved in the classroom every day while in the Homer School District. Qualified teachers in the district will serve as mentors (cooperating teachers) for the entire school year. Concurrent with this, candidates will complete all of the required coursework through ONU by attending classes at the on-site location (Homer). Classes will be taught during the day or evening according to a predetermined schedule.
Prospective candidates may contact Kim Johnston, Program Specialist, at 815-939-5184 or kjohnsto@olivet.edu. The application deadline is January 31, 2007. Twenty-five participants will be selected from the applications received.

3-3-06 TEACHER LOAN FORGIVENESS Attention teachers! The Taxpayer-Teacher Protection Act, signed into law last year, authorizes up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness for eligible, highly qualified math, science, and special education teachers. This dramatic increase -- $12,500 above the previous limit of $5,000 -- is meant to ease the shortage of teachers in important subject areas. To be eligible, teachers (with no outstanding loan balances before October 1, 1998, and who have borrowed before October 1, 2005) must be highly qualified, as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act; must have taught full-time, for five consecutive years, in a Title I school; and must have taught secondary math or science or elementary or secondary special education to students with disabilities. Also, an eligible teacher who has already received loan forgiveness may receive further loan forgiveness -- "up to the difference between $17,500 and the amount previously forgiven." FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE GO TO http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/GEN0414.html.
The Department has a number that people can call for answers to their questions regarding loan forgiveness. The number is 1.800.433.3243 (1.800.4FED.AID). |
