General Information

Field Experiences

Olivet Nazarene University teacher candidates, at the undergraduate are required to complete field experience hours prior to starting the student teaching experience. Candidates are placed early in the professional sequence and placements continue with increasing proficiency requirements and responsibility levels as student teaching approaches. Unit instructors monitor candidate progress and integrate learning experiences in the professional sequence courses. Classroom teachers provide feedback to candidates, and candidates are encouraged to reflect on each experience. Candidates must provide examples and evidence of successfully completing field experiences prior to being approved for the student teaching experience. Once a year, at a minimum, cooperating teachers are invited to participate in advisory meetings where unit members receive feedback about field experience and student teaching components.

Background Checks

All teacher candidates must submit and successfully pass a background check administered through the Olivet Nazarene Teacher Education Program. Many of the public schools require completion of a successful background check for the safety and security of their students. This background check must be successfully passed before a candidate is allowed to start on the required field experiences and student teaching experiences.

Candidates will be charged a fee to cover the cost of the background check and the administrative costs of this process. This fee is non-refundable. Background checks from previous universities/colleges and/or employment will not be accepted.

If a candidate does not successfully pass the background check, he/she may petition, in writing, to the Teacher Education Executive Committee for any exceptions. If exceptions are denied by the Teacher Education Executive Committee, the candidate may continue taking courses, but will not receive credit in classes requiring field experiences and student teaching. Because the field experience hours will not be met, the student will not complete the Teacher Education Program.
